Grit is a key skill children can gain through martial arts training at Rising Sun.
But what is it?
Grit is a term coined by Angela Duckworth, a psychologist and author, to describe the perseverance and passion needed to achieve long-term goals. Grit is an essential quality for success in life, and developing it early on can have a significant impact on a child’s future. In this article, we will discuss how children can gain grit by committing to a goal (black belt) or in any activity.
Set a goal:
The first step towards gaining grit is setting a goal. Every student at Rising Sun has a 4 year goal to black belt.
A goal should be specific (black belt), measurable (frequent testing and attaining new belt rank), achievable (every kid cna do it), relevant (martial arts increases focus and discipline) , and time-bound (4 years to black belt).
This is the SMART way to achieve a goal.
Encourage your child to set a goal that is meaningful and relevant to them. This could be anything from learning a new skill, participating in a competition, or achieving a specific grade in a subject. For Rising Sun students – Black Belt!
Make a plan:
Once your child has set a goal, the next step is to make a plan. A plan should outline the steps your child needs to take to achieve their goal. At Rising Sun, attend two classes per week as a habit. Encourage your child to break down their goal into smaller, manageable steps. This will help them stay focused and motivated, as they will be able to see progress along the way.
Stay committed:
Commitment is the key to gaining grit. Encourage your child to stay committed to their goal, even when faced with obstacles or setbacks:
- summer heat
- poor time management of homework
- too much screen time
Remind them that setbacks are a part of the learning process, and that it’s okay to make mistakes. Encourage them to stay positive and to keep pushing forward.
Stay motivated:
Motivation is another important factor in gaining grit. Encourage your child to stay motivated by reminding them of why they set their goal in the first place. Encourage them to celebrate their successes along the way, no matter how small they may be. This will help keep their motivation high and keep them focused on their goal. This is why we hold belt tests every 2 months to motivate kids to the next level.
Learn from failures:
Failure is a part of the learning process. Encourage your child to view failures as an opportunity to learn and grow. Help them see failures as a chance to improve and to try again. Encourage them to reflect on what went wrong and what they can do differently next time. Not every class will be perfect, but they WILL improve.
In conclusion, gaining grit is an essential skill for success in life. Encourage your child to set a goal, make a plan, stay committed, stay motivated, and learn from failures. By committing to a goal and developing grit, your child will be better equipped to handle the challenges they will face throughout their lives.
